I see what she's trying to do but I don't think it quite works.

What do you think she's trying to do, Sami?

Oh ok.. I was typing something and I didn't see your post here. Yeah, no problem !!
Well, it's a bit difficult to explain with words what I see because I think it wants to have an emotional impact. I see that there are a lot of interferences in there . She represents Joaquin as being sort of inaccessible, trapped in a world if you will, separated, with a fence,.. as if he was under a spell?
I like the idea but I think she could have done it better.. or maybe not. I'm getting used to it now.

If that's the case, then Joaquin would have been a collaborator? He would be in on that concept of wanting to portray something?
I see lights.

Exactly, I assume he is a collaborator.
I see lights too but only as a complement... I am interested to know what do you see..

I think they must have collaborated and discussed the themes behind the images. Maybe AD had an idea and Joaquin went along with it or vice versa. Or they had a conversation about something and these photos developed out of that. I also think they are meant to have an emotional impact.
I see the photos slightly differently. I can see what you're saying and I like the image of a spell: these photos do have that kind of quality to them.
Leaving aside the photo of three-fold Joaquin I see the other three photos as a sequence.
The first photo I see as someone looking in through a window. I’m not sure if this represents Joaquin – his higher nature maybe - or something/someone else. The figure looks like he has wings: Joaquin’s middle name is Raphael. Perhaps the veil between worlds – inner or outer – is parting. He looks like he could be brushing aside a veil and taking a step towards the window. The figure is accompanied by lights. His eyes are gazing slightly downwards at someone. The someone is Joaquin in the second photo in the sequence. He’s looking out of the window: his gaze is slightly upwards. Some of the lights have moved into the room to be with him. The third photo sees Joaquin close to the window; where the veil is thinnest perhaps? Lights come to him. I can’t decide if he’s sleeping, kneeling down or looking down at something outside the window. I find it quite a healing photo actually: as if winged Joaquin is showering this Joaquin in light. Or maybe this Joaquin is just looking at the lights coming to him.

Hi Joy, It's nice to look at the pictures as a sequence. I'm seeing more things after reading your comments.. Something slightly different , but related to what you see.. I can see the window and Joaquin looking through it. But how do you explain the stains on the window ? It seems as if someone had smashed a fruit on it or spilled a drink.
... the 2nd picture doesn't fit with the sequence . maybe it wants to represent that one can be seen from different angles , not just the typical framing ID picture.
do you think that the window could be a cage ? Like when you go to a zoo to see exotic animals... The zoo would be Hollywood, with celebrities being the attraction?

with the exception of the LA Weekly photos, I'm not particularly fond of how she has captured him in what she calls 'art'. I think that her first photos portray him as miserable and I don't like that. I especially hate the one where he is being punched in the face. It is unflattering in all senses of the word.

I agree with you Hippiechick. I am not a really big fan of her work, tho i do like very few photos of hers. Michael Muller is my most favorite Joaquin Photographer!! I Think he captures him well. and all his beauty!:) I don't like how she captured him either. esp with the punch in the face. Makes me think that sometimes she wants to actually do that to him.But i do like the first pic, even tho he does look miserable as you said:( xoxoox
