The scene is where Doc is picking at his feet, in his flat (apartment), possibly on the phone. His left foot is on the table and you can see his ankle with the tattoo, and it is on the inner rather than outer ankle. I'm sure it's his 'Busy Bee' tattoo from L49. I'm actually excited to have seen it, but I think I'm the only one. Lol.

Some snippets:

"What's great about working with Paul is that he creates an environment where you are truly allowed to discover something as it goes along," Phoenix says. "I have never worked with somebody that says, 'We shot for three days, but I don't think the haircut is right so we are going to scrap all of that until we find what we are looking for'."

For Inherent Vice, he turned to another music legend to get the right look.

"Paul showed me photos of Neil Young early on and I think he was the inspiration for the look of Doc initially, but I did not enjoy the sideburns in this one, and I had them for a long time," he says, with a chuckle.

Asked if there was method acting involved in his role as the constantly stoned detective, Phoenix doesn't dodge that question.

"In terms of being an actor, I smoked some weed one time, like when I was 25 on a movie, and it was a f---ing disaster," he says. "Weed makes you too self-conscious and the goal for me with acting is to not be self-aware at all, so I think it was a bad idea and I learnt my lesson and that's all I'll say about that."


.....he balks when asked to explain what his self-professed "simple life" looks like.

"Sorry, I'm not trying – well, I am trying to be evasive," he says, catching himself. "But my simple life is mine and I will just keep it that way."
