You can't buy fruit &
veg, rice, pasta, beans, lentils, dairy, bread, nuts, etc, in the regular supermarkets or markets? I find that hard to believe. Maybe if you think you have to replace the meat in your diet with meat-like substitutes or ready-made meals and take
aways you will find the diet expensive, but you can eat very well and quite cheaply without those kinds of substitutes. I don't think it's an expensive lifestyle at all. In fact, I know it's not an expensive lifestyle and so do a lot of other people. Just requires some planning and a bit of effort and the will to do it.

I don't know why either. Maybe it's something to do with the amount of legs an animal has?
I agree with you though, although I don't spend any time being bothered by it.
