Review: Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Parker Posey Do Their Best Work in Woody Allen’s Existential Morality Tale
"The fact remains that Phoenix is exceptional, Stone does maybe her best work, and Parker Posey makes us wonder why she’s never been in a Woody Allen film before. The three of them anchor the film perfectly. "

The Hollywood Reporter : 'Irrational Man': Cannes Review
"Abe is a classic Allen figure, stewing in frustration and self-disgust, and Phoenix plays him with a wonderful baggy, lived-in quality that makes us want to climb inside the character's whiskey-sozzled head, the same way Jill and Rita do. The actor does charismatic complexity and creeping imbalance like nobody else."
"Though it's an unconventional romance that takes a very uneasy turn, this morality tale wouldn't work without a convincing infatuation of the heart and mind at its center. And that element is propelled all the way by the sparky chemistry of Phoenix and Stone."

Variety : Cannes Film Review: ‘Irrational Man’
"But Allen’s visual direction and editing rhythms are particularly sharp and precise this time around, as is his work with the actors. In her second teaming with the director (after last year’s “Magic in the Moonlight”), Stone effortlessly captures the curiosity of young people with their whole lives ahead of them and none of the cynicism earned with age and disappointment. Phoenix, meanwhile, pulls off the trickier task of making us sympathize (at least fleetingly) with a sociopath, all the while avoiding the actorly deathtrap of “doing” Woody."

"There may be no more obvious premise for a Woody Allen movie this decade than Joaquin Phoenix as a possibly deranged philosophy professor who enters into a dangerous liaison with his student, spouting heady diatribes about Immanuel Kant in between bouts of unfulfilling sex and murderous schemes. After last year's forgettable "Magic in the Moonlight," the latest feature marks a small but welcome return to form."
"At first a lighthearted romp that shifts into dark comedy midway through, "Irrational Man" owes much to Phoenix's subversive energy and Allen's capacity to write involving monologues loaded with existential ideas."
Grade: B
