I was a bit hesitant to rent and watch this film, as I read more about the subject matter and later on how it was a very strong/gripping emotional piece. However, I decided to watch it, because I have seen pretty much every Joaquin Phoenix film to date, whether I liked it or not. I will compare the tone of this film to his other movie, "Her", and say that it addressed topics that are very personal to me. At times, it felt like he made this film and "Her", just for me. I am not trying to be arrogant or anything, but the way it had a vice grip on my heart and spoke to me, subliminaly at times, and at others quite bluntly, has brought about this feeling. I cried my eyes out after finishing this film. I felt emotionally drained and it had reopened deep emotional wounds and trauma for me, seeming to pour alcohol in and rub salt into these wounds. I don't like films like this. I don't like where they make me feel uncomfortable emotions and this film definitely did quite a lot of that.
Aside from how it personally made me feel? I think it is a good film, in it's own right. I feel like the cinematography of the film and the performances by the actors were excellent. The soundtrack was also very thoughtful and appropriate for the overall tone of the film. It was interesting to see this film shot in black and white. I would have liked to have the option to see it in color. The length of the film was appropriate. I think this is a good film for those who can emotionally handle and process it. It just isn't for me.

Thanks for the Review HC! I Feel that way about Ladder49, that it was made just for me too. it reminds me of how barry and i met and our relationship. i also act alot like june in walk the line. i always call bar a mean old man (even tho hes a good guy most of the time) when he gets bitchy. like june did to johnny in wtl. i cant wait to see it. Hope to see it soon. hopefully by next week. i still have yet to see Mary Magdalene. still waiting on that too. tho i have the dvd. gotta upgrade our video players on the comp. hugs

Ah Mary Magdalene, where Joaquin plays an ultra depressed/tortured Jesus and the sexual tension between him and Mary Magdalene is uncomfortable, LOL.

The man has talent, Brilliant yes, but it is his own demise, I watch him suffer through the year's. I wish I could hold him and show him the good that is hideing in there as well, it's there, God, and I mean the one true God called my name inside my heart, now I heal, taking a lump from my own brest , all documented by the way, I would love to heal his broken heart. |
