I went to the National Gallery in London today to see this exhibition:

It was fantastic! The google images really don't do them justice. They were so alive, vibrant and powerful.


I go to a lot of galleries but have never been inside the National Gallery so spent a lot of time looking at all the other paintings and works. I actually cried when I saw this one



Water-Lilies - Monet


The painting is huge and I'd seen pictures of it before but nothing prepared me for how overwhelmingly beautiful it is in real life. 

The National Gallery is only round the corner from Leicester Square so I popped over there afterwards - there's a great Jewish deli nearby which has a million veggie options to eat and it was trip down memory lane because the last time I was in LSqu was when I went to see The Master. Anyway, the Square was being prepared for the premiere of  Kingsman: The Secret Service and there was red carpet everywhere. Haha. I was amused because of what I said the other day about pitching my tent for when (if) Joaquin came to London for the BAFTAs this year. There were not many people around when I was there so I took some photos.

Is the Constable Hay Wain still there?



Can you see where Constable painted over his father sitting on the bench (the clue is the dog)
The National Gallery in London used to be free entrance... bet they're charging these days though?

They were taken from opposite sides of the square and I had to have my bags checked* before I was allowed into the area of the second photo. A sweet Italian couple asked me to take their photo with them standing on the carpet. I have another photo of my fingers on the carpet.   I'll post that tomorrow if you like.

Did Constable really paint over his dad and replace him with a dog? 


I don't know if The Hay Wain is still there or not. The Gallery has 61 rooms of paintings over 2 floors and the building is huge, as you probably know, so I didn't see everything, but there were paintings in particular I spent some time looking at.

There was also an exhibition by a Norwegian painter, Peder Balke, who was an inspiration to Maggie Hambling when she was painting her Walls of Water. Very interesting and unusual in some respects.

Actually, the Gallery still is free.   They do have exhibitions which you have to pay to see - Rembrandt at the moment -but I can do without paying to see that. 

Oh, there's a giant blue cockerel on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square atm. Or, as The Guardian put it, "A big blue cock". Been there since 2013.

No, the dog is looking at his father sat on the bench ... it's the dark shadow area just to the right of the dog, you can kind of make out the shape
Never seen a cock that big before... blue too
